The NRL is approaching one of the most important dates on its recruitment calendar, with November 1 set to open the door for players coming off contract at the end of the 2027 season to negotiate with rival clubs.

The upcoming window could have major consequences for the competition, with several established stars and emerging talents approaching the final stages of their current contracts.

Clubs will be looking to secure their best players before rivals make approaches, while teams with salary-cap space could use the opportunity to land major signings.

Among the biggest names attracting attention are Penrith halfback Nathan Cleary, Sydney Roosters playmaker Sam Walker, Melbourne Storm star Cameron Munster and South Sydney's Latrell Mitchell.

What does November 1 actually mean?

November 1 is an important date in the NRL's player-movement calendar.

Players coming off contract at the end of the 2027 season will be able to negotiate with rival clubs from that date for the 2028 season onwards.

It does not mean every player will leave their current club, nor does it mean deals will be announced immediately.

Instead, it gives rival clubs the opportunity to approach players and their representatives, potentially setting up a long period of negotiations and speculation.

For clubs wanting to avoid losing important players, getting extensions completed before the window opens is a major priority.

Nathan Cleary and Sam Walker headline the market

Two of the biggest names in the upcoming market are Nathan Cleary and Sam Walker.

Cleary remains one of the most influential players in the competition, and any possibility of him becoming available would attract enormous interest.

Penrith are reportedly in a strong position to retain their superstar halfback, with the club keen to keep him at the foot of the mountains for the long term.

However, until a new agreement is completed, other clubs will naturally keep an eye on his situation.

Walker is another major talking point after his contract situation at the Sydney Roosters became uncertain.

The Roosters have reportedly withdrawn a previous extension offer, leaving questions about whether the young halfback will remain at the club beyond 2027.

His situation could become one of the biggest stories of the upcoming recruitment period, particularly with clubs looking for long-term answers in the halves.

Cameron Munster and Melbourne's big decisions

The Melbourne Storm could also face a difficult period, with several important players approaching the open market.

Cameron Munster is among the headline names, with the possibility of a move to the PNG Chiefs reportedly being discussed.

Munster has previously spoken about the importance of securing his family's financial future, and a major contract decision could be approaching as he enters the later stages of his career.

Harry Grant is another important name to watch. His contract reportedly includes a player option that could allow him to explore the market, although Melbourne will be determined to keep him.

The Storm also have decisions to make over Xavier Coates, Stefano Utoikamanu and other key players, meaning their roster could look very different in the coming seasons if negotiations do not go their way.

Matt Burton could be one of the biggest targets

Another player whose future is attracting significant attention is Canterbury Bulldogs star Matt Burton.

Burton is reportedly being monitored by the Perth Bears, who are looking to build a competitive roster ahead of their entry into the NRL.

The Bulldogs' next contract offer is reportedly expected to value Burton as a centre rather than a five-eighth, potentially creating an opening for rival clubs to offer him a more attractive deal.

Parramatta have also been linked with interest, with Burton potentially viewed as an option in the halves.

His situation is particularly interesting given the reported interest from Perth and the possibility of a major financial offer.

With Burton already having permission to speak with rival clubs, his future could become one of the most closely followed stories of the November window.

Latrell Mitchell and the Rabbitohs

South Sydney also have a major decision to make regarding Latrell Mitchell.

The superstar centre remains one of the most dangerous attacking players in the competition, but his future beyond 2027 is not yet settled.

The Rabbitohs will need to weigh up his value to the team against the financial commitment required to keep him.

The Perth Bears could be an interesting club to watch, particularly with their need to attract established stars and build a strong roster.

Mitchell's future could become a major talking point if negotiations with South Sydney do not progress.

Which clubs could benefit most?

The November window could be particularly important for clubs with significant salary-cap room and a need for established talent.

The Perth Bears are an obvious club to watch as they continue building their roster. The PNG Chiefs could also be active as they prepare for their entry into the competition.

Meanwhile, established clubs such as the Roosters, Bulldogs, Storm and Rabbitohs will be trying to balance retaining their biggest names with keeping enough room to strengthen elsewhere.

The next few months could therefore have a major impact on how the competition looks in 2028.

The following is the club-by-club list of players reported as coming off contract at the end of the 2027 season. Contract situations can change before and after November 1, and some players are already understood to be negotiating extensions or considering other options.

Note: This is the published club-by-club list of players reported off contract at the end of 2027, not a guarantee that all remain unsigned. For example, some players have reportedly agreed to extensions or have options and negotiations that could change their status. Harry Grant is discussed in the Storm section because of his reported player option, although he is not included in the published club list above.

A huge few months ahead for the NRL

With 176 players reported to be approaching the open market, the NRL is heading towards another significant period of contract activity.

Some stars could commit to their current clubs, others may begin exploring fresh opportunities, and a handful of major names could become the subject of intense bidding battles.

The biggest question is whether the competition's established clubs can keep their stars or whether the new expansion teams will use their recruitment opportunities to make a major statement.

Which player do you think is most likely to make a big move after November 1?
