The Sydney Roosters have withdrawn their contract extension offer for star halfback Sam Walker after failing to reach an agreement with his management, leaving his long-term future at the club uncertain.
The club confirmed the decision on Monday night, announcing that its offer to extend Walker’s contract beyond the 2027 season had been taken off the table.
“The Sydney Roosters have this evening advised the management of Sam Walker that the Club’s offer for a contract extension beyond the 2027 season has been withdrawn after the parties were unable to reach an agreement on terms,” the club said in a statement.
The Roosters added that they remained focused on maintaining a premiership-winning roster, with recruitment and retention decisions aimed at supporting the squad’s strength, balance and long-term success.
Walker, 24, remains contracted to the Roosters for the 2027 season, meaning the withdrawal does not signal an immediate departure. However, it places his future beyond next year in serious doubt as rival clubs prepare to pursue his signature.
The halfback had been negotiating a new deal with the Tricolours for several months, with reports indicating the club had been prepared to offer a lucrative four-year extension worth more than $6 million.
Negotiations reportedly stalled over the value of the deal, with Walker’s management and the club unable to settle on terms before the Roosters decided to withdraw their offer.
The development comes at a crucial time, with November 1 approaching; the date Walker can negotiate with rival NRL clubs for the 2028 season and beyond.
Walker had been linked with a potential long-term future at the Roosters after helping the club win the 2026 premiership. He has also earned recognition at representative level, including selection for the Australian Kangaroos.
With the Roosters’ offer now withdrawn, rival clubs could have an opportunity to make a major play for one of the NRL’s most prominent young playmakers.
For now, Walker remains a Rooster for 2027, but the club’s decision has created significant uncertainty over whether he will still be wearing the red, white and blue beyond that season.
