New Zealand winger Ronaldo Mulitalo and Fiji halfback Brandon Wakeham have learned their punishments following the fiery incident that overshadowed the Kiwis' 78–0 demolition of Fiji at the Rugby League World Cup.

Both players were sent from the field in the 52nd minute after a confrontation that began with a dangerous high shot from Mulitalo before Wakeham retaliated with a punch.

The Match Review Panel has now handed both players Grade 2 charges, with each facing a one-match suspension if they accept an early guilty plea. However, either player risks having their suspension increased to two matches if they challenge the charge and are unsuccessful.

What happened between Mulitalo and Wakeham?

The incident occurred with New Zealand already holding a commanding 48–0 advantage.

Mulitalo rushed out of the defensive line and made high contact with Fiji winger Ronald Philitoga, striking him in the head with his shoulder.

Philitoga required a head injury assessment and did not return to the field.

The tackle immediately sparked a reaction from the Fijian players, with Wakeham confronting Mulitalo before throwing a punch that connected with the New Zealand winger's head.

Referee Grant Atkins had little choice but to send both players off, leaving both teams to finish the match with 12 players.

Despite the confrontation, New Zealand continued their dominance, eventually completing a 78–0 victory.

Mulitalo's punishment: Kiwis lose winger for semi-final

Mulitalo has been charged with a Grade 2 careless high tackle for his contact on Philitoga.

The one-match suspension is a significant setback for New Zealand, who will now be without one of their regular outside backs for their upcoming World Cup semi-final.

The Cronulla Sharks winger has been an important contributor throughout the tournament, scoring three tries and providing plenty of energy on the wing.

However, there is some positive news for the Kiwis. If Mulitalo accepts the early guilty plea and New Zealand progress to the final, he would be eligible to return for the tournament's biggest game.

If he challenges the charge and loses, his suspension would increase to two matches, potentially ending his World Cup campaign altogether.

Wakeham also receives one-match suspension

Wakeham has also been handed a Grade 2 charge, this time for striking Mulitalo during the confrontation.

The Fiji halfback's punch was the second major incident in the space of seconds, and it resulted in his immediate dismissal.

Like Mulitalo, Wakeham faces a one-match suspension if he accepts the early guilty plea, with the possibility of a two-match ban if he unsuccessfully contests the charge.

Unlike Mulitalo, however, Wakeham's punishment will not affect Fiji's World Cup campaign. The Bati have been eliminated from the tournament, meaning there are no further matches for him to miss at this year's World Cup.

The situation could nevertheless be relevant to Wakeham's playing commitments beyond the tournament, depending on how the suspension is applied.
