The Perth Bears are reportedly ready to make a massive play for Canterbury Bulldogs star Matt Burton, with CODE Sports journalist Dean Ritchie reporting that the expansion club could offer the representative playmaker a five-year deal worth approximately $5 million.

The proposed contract would be worth around $1 million per season, representing a significant commitment from the Bears as they attempt to secure an established NRL star ahead of their entry into the competition.

Burton has become one of the most talked-about names in the NRL transfer market, with Perth identifying the 26-year-old as a potential marquee signing who could help lead the club into its inaugural campaign.

The reported $5 million offer would put serious pressure on Canterbury, who are still keen to retain the talented utility but face competition from a club prepared to make him a central figure in its long-term plans.

Why Perth want Matt Burton

The Bears' interest in Burton is understandable. The 26-year-old has established himself as one of the NRL's most dangerous attacking players, possessing an outstanding kicking game, powerful running ability and the capacity to create opportunities from long range.

He has represented New South Wales and Australia, while also winning a premiership with Penrith in 2021.

Perth reportedly see him as their preferred five-eighth, potentially forming a familiar combination with former Bulldogs teammate Toby Sexton.

Sexton has already committed to the Bears, and reuniting the pair could give the expansion club an established halves partnership before its first season.

Burton's experience would also be valuable in a young squad that will need leadership as it adjusts to the demands of the NRL.

Could Canterbury lose another key player?

The Bulldogs are not giving up on retaining Burton, with general manager Phil Gould making it clear that the club wants him to remain at Canterbury. However, there are complications surrounding his long-term role.

Canterbury have invested heavily in their halves, with Lachlan Galvin part of their plans and Mitchell Woods emerging as a young playmaking option.

Burton has also demonstrated that he can be effective in the centres, creating a question over whether the Bulldogs see his long-term future in the halves or further out wide.

Perth are reportedly prepared to offer him the opportunity to play five-eighth, alongside a salary that reflects the value of the position.

Canterbury must now consider whether they can match the financial commitment and provide Burton with the role he wants.

One of the biggest attractions of a move to Perth could be the opportunity for Burton to reunite with Sexton.

The pair previously played together at Canterbury and developed an understanding during their time in the Bulldogs' halves.

Sexton has already made the move west, and the possibility of playing alongside Burton again would give the Bears a potentially exciting combination.

Rather than starting their inaugural season with an entirely new halves partnership, Perth could have two players who already understand each other's games. For a new franchise, that familiarity could be extremely valuable.

It would also give the Bears a clear attacking identity, with Burton's running and kicking game complemented by Sexton's organisation.

Is an early release possible?

One of the other major questions surrounding Burton's future is whether Perth could secure him before the end of his existing Canterbury contract.

Burton is contracted to the Bulldogs through the end of 2027, meaning an early move would require Canterbury's approval.

The Bears are preparing for their first NRL season in 2027, so securing Burton immediately would be a major priority if an agreement could be reached.

However, Canterbury still hold an important position in negotiations and have not confirmed that they are willing to release him early.

If an immediate move cannot be arranged, Burton could potentially become available for Perth in 2028.
