The Sydney Roosters have been crowned 2026 NRL premiers after defeating the Newcastle Knights 19-18 in a thrilling Grand Final at Accor Stadium.

The Knights looked on track to complete one of the greatest turnarounds in NRL history after taking a 12-6 lead into half-time, but the Roosters produced a composed second-half performance to finally break Newcastle’s resistance.

Sydney had controlled much of the territory and possession during the opening half but were unable to turn that dominance into enough points, with the Knights defending their line repeatedly and making the most of their limited opportunities.

Kalyn Ponga was outstanding for Newcastle, producing a spectacular long-range effort as the Knights repeatedly threatened whenever they managed to get the ball into space.

Mark Nawaqanitawase continued his incredible finish to the season for the Roosters, scoring crucial tries as Sydney eventually turned the momentum in their favour.

Sam Walker also played a major role in the comeback, with his kicking game helping the Roosters control the second half and keep Newcastle pinned inside their own territory.

The Knights fought desperately to stay in the contest, but the Roosters’ experience and composure ultimately proved decisive.

For Newcastle, the defeat brings a heartbreaking end to an extraordinary season.

The Knights finished last in 2025 before producing a remarkable revival under Justin Holbrook, fighting their way through three sudden-death finals victories to reach their first Grand Final since 2001.

They had already overcome the Rabbitohs, Warriors and Panthers during their finals run, including a remarkable victory over Penrith despite being reduced to 12 men.

The Roosters, meanwhile, finish the season as NRL premiers after overcoming a determined Newcastle side and delivering a fitting farewell for several of their biggest names.

Daly Cherry-Evans played his final NRL game, becoming the oldest player to feature in an NRL Grand Final, while Nawaqanitawase also signed off from the Roosters before his move back to rugby union.

The Knights may have fallen short, but their transformation from wooden spooners to Grand Finalists will go down as one of the most remarkable seasons in recent NRL history.

For the Roosters, it is another premiership to add to the club’s remarkable history.
