Josh Addo-Carr's NRL career is hanging in on a knifes edge, with the Parramatta Eels winger's future at risk following an alleged second positive roadside drug test.

The 31-year-old was reported to have returned a preliminary positive test for cocaine in Sydney in September, prompting a police investigation and putting his playing future under serious scrutiny.

Parramatta are yet to make a final decision on Addo-Carr's contract, while the NRL is awaiting the result of further testing before determining what disciplinary action may follow.

However, the possibility of another lengthy suspension, combined with the threat of losing his contract, has raised a difficult question: could one of the NRL's most recognisable wingers have played his last game in the competition?

Josh Addo-Carr faces an uncertain NRL future

Addo-Carr's situation is particularly serious because it follows a similar incident in 2024, when he was released by the Canterbury Bulldogs after a roadside drug test.

The winger subsequently joined Parramatta for the 2025 season, receiving an opportunity to rebuild his career and demonstrate that he could return to his best.

His time with the Eels initially appeared to be a fresh start. Addo-Carr remained an experienced attacking weapon and continued to contribute on the field, while his career appeared to be moving in a positive direction.

But the latest alleged incident has put that progress at risk. According to reports published in October, Addo-Carr and the relevant authorities were still awaiting formal confirmation of the second sample. Until that process is completed, the full consequences remain uncertain.

The Eels have acknowledged the incident and said they are cooperating with the appropriate processes while providing welfare support to Addo-Carr and his family.

Could Parramatta terminate Addo-Carr's contract?

One of the biggest questions surrounding the situation is whether the Eels will retain the winger.

Addo-Carr is reportedly contracted to Parramatta on a deal worth approximately $400,000 per season. With his future unresolved, the club must weigh its contractual position against the seriousness of the allegations and any eventual NRL sanction.

Reports have indicated that Parramatta could terminate his contract if the second test confirms the alleged breach.

Such a decision would leave Addo-Carr searching for another club at a difficult point in his career. At 31, he still has valuable experience and a proven try-scoring record, but another disciplinary setback could make prospective clubs reluctant to take a chance on him.

No final contract decision should be treated as confirmed until the Eels announce their position.

A lengthy NRL suspension could make a comeback difficult

Even if Addo-Carr remains contracted to Parramatta or another club decides to sign him, a potential suspension could significantly affect his future.

Reports have indicated that a second confirmed contravention under the NRL's illicit drug policy could result in a 12-match suspension, alongside other possible sanctions.

That would mean missing a substantial portion of the 2027 season, assuming the relevant breach is established and the policy is applied in those circumstances.

For a club considering signing the winger, the decision would involve more than his ability on the field. Recruitment teams would also need to consider his availability, the circumstances surrounding the case and the risks involved in committing a roster spot and salary-cap funds.

A suspension of that length would not automatically end Addo-Carr's career, but it could make securing another opportunity significantly more difficult.

From premiership winner to a career crossroads

It is easy to forget how much Addo-Carr has achieved during his NRL career.

The winger made his debut with the Wests Tigers in 2016 before establishing himself as a major attacking threat at the Melbourne Storm. He played an important role in Melbourne's premiership-winning campaigns in 2017 and 2020 and earned recognition as one of the competition's most dangerous finishers.

He later joined Canterbury before moving to Parramatta, continuing to produce tries and provide experience to the teams he represented.

According to his official NRL profile, Addo-Carr had accumulated 224 NRL appearances and 167 tries by the end of the 2026 season. He also earned representative honours for New South Wales and Australia over the course of his career.

Those achievements demonstrate why his current situation is so significant. Addo-Carr has spent years establishing himself as an elite winger, and his speed and finishing ability have made him a familiar figure to rugby league supporters.

Yet a successful playing record cannot guarantee a future contract, particularly when a player's eligibility and availability are under question.

Is this the end of the road for the Foxx?

Addo-Carr's story remains unresolved, but the stakes are enormous.

The Eels must decide how to handle his future, the NRL must determine whether disciplinary action is warranted, and Addo-Carr faces the possibility of another major setback in his professional career.

A 12-match suspension and the loss of his Parramatta contract would leave him with a difficult path back into the competition. At the same time, declaring his NRL career finished before the relevant processes are complete would be premature.

For a player who has won premierships, represented his state and country, and scored more than 150 NRL tries, the prospect of an abrupt ending is significant.

The coming weeks could determine whether Addo-Carr receives another chance in the NRL or whether his time in the competition is drawing to a close.

For now, the Foxx's future remains uncertain and rugby league is waiting for answers.
