Queensland rugby league legend Darius Boyd has been appointed as the new head coach of the Queensland Maroons, taking over from Billy Slater ahead of the 2027 State of Origin series.
The appointment marks a remarkable new chapter for one of Queensland's greatest ever representatives.
Boyd takes over following Slater's decision to step down after five years in charge of the Maroons. Slater guided Queensland to three State of Origin series victories during his tenure, leaving enormous shoes to fill.
However, Boyd arrives with strong Queensland credentials and an increasingly impressive coaching resume.
Few people understand what it means to wear the Maroon jersey quite like Boyd.
The former fullback and centre played 28 State of Origin matches for Queensland and scored 17 tries throughout his Origin career. He was a key figure during one of the most dominant periods in Maroons history and represented Queensland alongside some of the game's greatest players.
Boyd also enjoyed an outstanding club and international career, playing more than 300 NRL matches and representing Australia at the highest level.
Now, he faces his biggest challenge yet.
While some may see Boyd's appointment as a bold move, the former Brisbane Broncos captain has already begun building a strong reputation in the coaching ranks.
Boyd has been coaching Queensland's Under-19s side and has enjoyed success while helping develop the next generation of Maroons. His role has allowed him to work closely with some of the state's most promising young players while also learning the demands of representative coaching.
He has also continued to develop his coaching experience through Queensland's elite pathways, including work with the Broncos' emerging programs.
Boyd's experience as an Origin player could prove to be one of his biggest strengths.
He knows the pressure. He knows the rivalry. And most importantly, he knows exactly what representing Queensland means.
Boyd takes charge at an important time for Queensland.
After losing the 2026 State of Origin series, the Maroons will be determined to respond and reclaim the shield from New South Wales.
The 2027 series will also be historic, with Auckland's Eden Park set to host an Origin match for the first time. Queensland will need to quickly adapt to a new coach and a new era.
Boyd will have the difficult task of building on the foundations left behind by Slater while putting his own stamp on the Queensland team.
The biggest question will now be whether Boyd can translate his success as a player into success as a coach.
There is no doubting his understanding of the Maroons culture, while his work with Queensland's Under-19s has shown he is capable of developing players and building strong connections within a squad.
The step up to senior State of Origin coaching will be enormous, but Boyd knows better than most what is required to succeed on rugby league's biggest representative stage.
For a player who gave so much to Queensland throughout his career, the opportunity to now lead the Maroons into battle represents the next chapter of his remarkable rugby league journey.
