Tottenham have continued their spending spree, signing West Ham midfielder Matheus Fernandes for £85m, and Sandro Tonali from Newcastle for £100m! Fernandes and Tonali are Roberto De Zerbi's FIFTH and SIXTH summer signings as he looks to steer Tottenham away from another relegation battle.
De Zerbi has so far signed, Andrew Robertson (Free from Liverpool), Marcos Senesi (Free from Bournemouth), Martin Dubravka (Free from Burnley), and Jan Paul Van Hecke (£52m from Brighton), and now Matheus Fernandes (£85m from West Ham), and Sandro Tonali (£100m from Newcastle).
West Ham will be disappointed to see a player of Fernandes calibre leave, but will be pleased to get the full £85m they asked for, just a year on from signing him from Southampton for just £38m.
Newcastle will be very much in the same boat, happy to get big money but disappointed to lose an integral player.
Tottenham have had a torrid time signing expensive players, with Fernandes and Tonali now top of the pile in their history! Here is their most expensive signings:
- Cristian Romero - £42m. Was elected as club captain after the exit of Heung Min Son, but has been one of the most overrated players in recent memory. His poor discipline, poor positioning, poor leadership, and flirting with the idea of moving clubs has made him a more unpopular figure in recent times.
- Brennan Johnson - £47.5m. Seemed an overpay at the time, Johnson never took off in a Tottenham jersey, and has already moved on to another club after a poor spell.
- Xavi Simons - £51.8m. Simons arrived with a point to prove, being touted as a wonder kid in his teenage years. An ACL injury at the end of last season stopped him in his tracks. He is yet to be a consistent performer for Tottenham.
- Jan Paul Van Hecke - £52m. A new addition at the back for Tottenham, and likely a Cristian Romero replacement as he's rumoured to be leaving the club. Top player for Brighton, he should be a great addition to this side.
- Mohammed Kudus - £55m. A debut season barred by injuries, Kudus was a great player at West Ham. Tottenham fans will be hoping to see more of Kudus in 2026/27.
- Richarlison - £60m. An occasional special goal, and not much else. Richarlison has been a poor signing for Tottenham thus far, and has moved down the pecking order at Tottenham.
- Tanguy Ndombele - £62.8m. A disaster of a signing. Ndombele never looked good in a Tottenham shirt, quickly became overweight, and had a poor attitude. Total disaster.
- Dominic Solanke - £65m. Hasn't found his feet yet at Tottenham, but has proved he can score goals at the top level. De Zerbi is reported to have given Solanke the starting reigns as Tottenham's first choice number 9 this coming season. He has a lot to prove still.
- Matheus Fernandes - £85m.
- Sandro Tonali - £100m.
