Football is always searching for its next generation of superstars. Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo dominated an era, while players such as Kylian Mbappé, Erling Haaland and Lamine Yamal have helped shape the next.
But predicting who will become the world's best players is never straightforward. Some teenagers fulfil their enormous potential, while others struggle to make the transition from promising youngster to established professional.
With Lionel Messi recently sharing his own selections of future stars, I have decided to put together my own list of 10 male footballers aged 18 or younger who I believe could become some of the best players in the world.
Rather than selecting only the most obvious names, my list combines players already making their mark in senior football with emerging talents who could become household names in the coming years.
Lionel Messi's Top 10:
Tomás Aranda
Can Uzun
Gilberto Mora
Max Dowman
Zavier Gozo
Jesús Rodríguez
Kees Smit
Chloe Sarwie
Giovanna Waksman
Lotta Wrede
Rio Ngumoha

Age: 17 | Nationality: English | Club: Liverpool | Position: Winger
Rio Ngumoha is one of the most exciting young attacking talents in English football. Having developed at Chelsea before joining Liverpool in 2024, the winger has quickly attracted attention for his explosive acceleration, close control and confidence when taking on defenders.
Ngumoha made history in August 2025 when he scored a dramatic stoppage-time winner against Newcastle United on his Premier League debut, becoming Liverpool's youngest-ever goalscorer. It was a remarkable moment for a player who was still only 16.
His biggest strengths are his direct running, ability to beat opponents in one-on-one situations and willingness to attack space. He possesses the kind of natural attacking instinct that can make life extremely difficult for defenders.
The next step will be turning those flashes of brilliance into consistent performances at senior level. If he continues developing his decision-making and end product, Ngumoha has the potential to become a major attacking weapon for Liverpool and England.
Max Dowman

Age: 16 | Nationality: English | Club: Arsenal | Position: Attacking midfielder/winger
Max Dowman has already generated enormous excitement at Arsenal, with his technical ability and confidence on the ball making him one of the most closely watched teenagers in English football.
Comfortable operating as an attacking midfielder or winger, Dowman combines close control with exceptional composure for his age. He is capable of carrying the ball past opponents, creating opportunities in tight spaces and attempting passes that can unlock organised defences.
His progress through Arsenal's academy has been particularly impressive, with his early senior opportunities highlighting the club's belief in his ability. His dribbling and creativity have encouraged comparisons with some of football's most naturally gifted attacking players.
However, the challenge for Dowman will be maintaining his development as he moves into regular senior football. Physical development, consistency and decision-making will all be important.
If his current trajectory continues, he could become one of the defining young English footballers of his generation.
Lennart Karl

Age: 18 | Nationality: German | Club: Bayern Munich | Position: Attacking midfielder/winger
Bayern Munich has a long history of developing elite German talent, and Lennart Karl is another young player attracting attention at the club.
The left-footed attacker can operate centrally or from a wide position, using his close control, quick changes of direction and sharp finishing to threaten opposition defences.
Karl's ability to find space around the penalty area and contribute directly to attacking moves makes him particularly interesting. Rather than relying solely on pace or physicality, he uses technique and awareness to create opportunities.
His progression into Bayern's senior environment has given him the opportunity to learn alongside established international players. That experience could prove invaluable as he develops his understanding of the tactical and physical demands of elite football.
There is still plenty of room for improvement, particularly in consistency and his contribution without the ball. Nevertheless, Karl has the technical foundation to develop into an important attacking player for Bayern and Germany.
Konstantinos Karetsas

Age: 18 | Nationality: Greek | Club: Genk | Position: Attacking midfielder
Konstantinos Karetsas is one of the most exciting creative midfield prospects to emerge from European football in recent years.
Born in Belgium, Karetsas developed at Genk and earned recognition for his performances in senior football and with the Greek national team. His vision, passing range and ability to operate between the lines make him a particularly intriguing prospect.
Karetsas is at his best when given the freedom to receive the ball, turn towards goal and create opportunities for teammates. He can play incisive passes through defensive lines, combine quickly in tight spaces and use his dribbling to move the ball into dangerous areas.
His creativity is arguably his greatest asset, but his long-term ceiling will also depend on how effectively he adapts to different tactical systems and more physically demanding opposition.
If he continues progressing, Karetsas could develop into the kind of playmaker capable of controlling matches at the highest level.
Jorthy Mokio

Age: 18 | Nationality: Belgian | Club: Ajax | Position: Defensive midfielder/centre-back
Jorthy Mokio offers something different from the attacking players elsewhere on this list. The versatile Belgian is capable of operating in defensive midfield and central defence, providing tactical flexibility and a valuable left-footed option in possession.
After developing at Gent, Mokio moved to Ajax, a club renowned for producing technically accomplished footballers. He has already gained experience in senior football despite his young age.
His composure on the ball is one of his most appealing qualities. Mokio is comfortable receiving possession under pressure, helping build attacks from deep and moving the ball forward rather than simply playing safe passes.
His versatility could become a significant advantage as he progresses. Modern football increasingly values defenders who can contribute to possession and midfielders who can help protect the back line.
To reach the elite level, Mokio will need to continue refining his defensive positioning, awareness and consistency. However, his technical ability and adaptability give him an excellent foundation.
Abdellah Ouazane

Age: 17 | Nationality: Moroccan | Club: Ajax | Position: Central midfielder
Abdellah Ouazane is an intriguing prospect who could become increasingly well known as his career develops.
Born in Amsterdam, the midfielder has progressed through Ajax's development system while representing Morocco internationally. His technical ability and understanding of possession-based football make him an interesting player to monitor.
Ouazane's game is built around his ability to retain possession, move intelligently and contribute to attacking combinations. He has also demonstrated an eye for goal and the ability to provide assists at youth and reserve level.
Playing within Ajax's system provides a valuable environment for a young midfielder to develop his technical skills and tactical understanding. The club's emphasis on possession and intelligent movement could suit his strengths.
The major question is how quickly he can establish himself in senior football. Translating promising youth performances into consistent first-team contributions is one of the biggest challenges for any young player.
If he continues progressing, Ouazane could become a player worth watching closely over the next few seasons.
Brian Madjo

Age: 17 | Nationality: Luxembourger| Club: Aston Villa | Position: Striker
Brian Madjo is a physically imposing young forward who offers a different profile from the smaller, technically focused attackers elsewhere on this list.
Standing approximately 1.93 metres tall, Madjo has the physical tools to compete with defenders, attack crosses and provide a target for direct passes. His size makes him an intriguing prospect in a position where physical presence can be a significant advantage.
However, height alone does not make a striker. His long-term development will depend on improving his movement, finishing, link-up play and ability to create opportunities against organised senior defences.
Madjo has attracted attention through his development in European football, and his potential makes him an interesting player to follow. The key will be whether he can combine his physical advantages with the technical qualities required of a modern centre-forward.
If he continues developing those areas, he could become a difficult striker to defend against.
Tian Nai Koren

Age: 17 | Nationality: Slovenian | Club: Club Brugge | Position: Attacking midfielder/winger
Tian Nai Koren is one of Slovenia’s most exciting young prospects, already making his way into senior football at just 17 years old. Koren joined Club Brugge from Maribor in 2025 and progressed through the Belgian side’s development system before earning opportunities with the first team.
Comfortable operating as an attacking midfielder or on either wing, Koren offers versatility in the final third. His development at youth level has been particularly encouraging: he scored 10 goals in 14 appearances for Slovenia’s Under-17 side, demonstrating an eye for goal as well as his attacking potential. He also scored in the UEFA Youth League for Club Brugge’s Under-19s, showing he can make an impact against strong European opposition.
Koren has already gained experience in senior Belgian football and has represented Slovenia at international level. With his technical ability, attacking instincts and experience beyond his years, he is a name worth watching as he continues to develop at Club Brugge.
Kennet Eichhorn

Age: 17 | Nationality: German | Club: Bayer Leverkusen | Position: Central midfielder
Kennet Eichhorn is a particularly interesting inclusion for anyone looking beyond the biggest European clubs for future stars.
The German midfielder has attracted attention for his performances at Hertha BSC, with his maturity and ability to operate in central midfield making him one to watch. Young midfielders often need time to develop physically and tactically, but Eichhorn has shown why he is regarded as a promising prospect.
His potential lies in his ability to contribute to different phases of play. A successful central midfielder must be comfortable receiving the ball under pressure, making sensible decisions, moving possession forward and understanding when to help defensively.
Those qualities are particularly important in modern football, where midfielders are expected to combine technical security with tactical discipline.
Eichhorn still has significant development ahead of him, but his progress makes him an intriguing long-term prediction. If he continues improving and earns opportunities at a higher level, he could become a major player for German football.
Anísio Cabral

Photo: Getty Images
Age: 18 | Nationality: Portuguese | Club: Benfica | Position: Striker
Anísio Cabral completes the list as another young forward worth monitoring closely.
Developed within Benfica's highly regarded youth system, Cabral has attracted attention for his performances in youth football, including his contributions on the international stage for Portugal.
His appeal as a prospect comes from his goal-scoring instincts and ability to operate in dangerous areas around the penalty box. For a young striker, developing reliable movement, timing runs effectively and remaining composed in front of goal are essential qualities.
Benfica has a strong history of developing young players and providing pathways towards senior football. That environment could be valuable as Cabral looks to translate his youth-level performances into opportunities at a higher level.
The next stage of his career will be particularly important. Consistent performances against older, more experienced defenders will provide a clearer indication of his long-term potential.
If he continues developing his finishing, movement and all-round attacking game, Cabral could become an important name to follow in Portuguese football.
My list is very midfield/forward heavy, as those kind of players excite you more often typically over defensive players, so to include players from all over the pitch, here is my top U18 prospect XI:
GK: Ilan Jourdren (France/RC Lens)
RB: Daniel Banjaqui (Portugal/Benfica)
CB's: Freddie Simmonds (England/Brighton) and Honest Ahanor (Italy/Chelsea)
LB: Moncef Zekri (Morocco/Sporting CP)
CM's: Jorthy Mokio (Belgium/Ajax) and Kennet Eichhorn (Germany/Bayer Leverkusen)
CAM: Lennart Karl (Germany/Bayern Munich)
LM: Rio Ngumoha (England/Liverpool)
RM: Max Dowman (England/Arsenal)
ST: Brian Madjo (Luxembourg/Aston Villa)
Final thoughts
Predicting the next generation of football superstars is an exercise in both scouting and imagination. Some of these players have already demonstrated their ability at senior level, while others remain at an earlier stage of their development.
Ngumoha and Dowman stand out for their attacking ability, Karl and Karetsas offer exciting creative potential, while Mokio and Eichhorn represent the importance of identifying future midfield and defensive stars.
The remaining selections provide an opportunity to look beyond the most familiar names and follow players who could emerge over the coming years.
Of course, there are no guarantees. Development depends on coaching, opportunities, fitness, mentality and the ability to adapt as the game becomes more demanding.
But that is what makes these predictions interesting. In five years, some of these teenagers could be established stars playing for the biggest clubs in the world. Others may take a different path.
The challenge is to identify the players with the potential to reach the very top before the rest of the football world catches up.
