The 2026/27 A-League Men season is finally here, with all 12 clubs preparing for another campaign full of goals, drama and plenty of surprises.
Auckland FC enter the season as the defending champions, while Newcastle Jets will be looking to build on their impressive premiership-winning campaign. Melbourne City, meanwhile, have strengthened their squad and will be hoping to return to the top of Australian football.
With new signings, fresh faces and plenty of uncertainty heading into the opening round, here are my predictions for the final ladder, the championship winner and the individual awards.
A-League Men 2026/27 predicted ladder
1. Melbourne City
Melbourne City are my pick to win the competition. Their recruitment has been impressive, with the addition of Socceroos winger Awer Mabil and experienced midfielder Emiliano Marcondes strengthening an already competitive squad. If Max Caputo can take another step forward in attack, City have the quality to challenge for silverware.
2. Auckland FC
The defending champions should remain one of the competition's strongest sides. Auckland have established themselves as a serious force since entering the A-League, and their organisation and ability to perform in big games should keep them near the top of the ladder.
3. Newcastle Jets
After winning the premiership last season, Newcastle will be aiming to prove they can maintain that level. Joe Lolley is a significant addition and could become one of the competition's most influential attacking players. Losing several important contributors is a concern, but the Jets should still be competitive.
4. Sydney FC
Sydney FC will be desperate to bounce back after a disappointing previous campaign. There has been significant change at the club, but the squad has enough talent to climb the ladder if the new combinations click under Patrick Kisnorbo.
5. Melbourne Victory
Victory have lost some major names, including reigning Johnny Warren Medallist Juan Mata, but the arrival of Tom Lockyer, Philipp Ziereis and Guillermo May gives them plenty to work with. They should be in the mix for the finals, although replacing Mata's creativity will be a major challenge.
6. Macarthur Bulls
Macarthur have undergone a significant rebuild and will be an intriguing side to watch under Sasa Ognenovski. The additions of Musa Toure and Apostolos Stamatelopoulos provide attacking options, while the club will hope its new squad can quickly develop into a cohesive unit.
7. Western Sydney Wanderers
The Wanderers have the potential to surprise this season, particularly if their attacking players find consistency. However, there are still questions about whether the squad has enough depth to push into the top half of the ladder.
8. Adelaide United
Adelaide should be competitive, but losing important attacking talent means they could struggle to reproduce their best performances consistently. A finals challenge is possible, although there is little room for error in such a tight competition.
9. Brisbane Roar
Brisbane have made significant changes to their squad and will be hoping for a fresh start. There are some interesting additions, but it may take time for the new-look side to settle. A mid-to-lower-table finish feels the most likely outcome.
10. Perth Glory
Perth face another difficult season after losing key players, including Adam Taggart. Their recruitment will need to deliver quickly if they are to avoid spending another campaign near the bottom of the ladder.
11. Wellington Phoenix
Wellington have the potential to cause problems for stronger opponents, but questions remain over their consistency and attacking output. They could pick up some important results, although a sustained push up the ladder looks difficult.
12. Central Coast Mariners
Central Coast are my pick to finish last. The Mariners have a proud history of developing young players, but there are concerns about their squad depth and whether they can consistently compete with the more experienced teams in the league.
My A-League award predictions
Premiers and champions: Melbourne City
Melbourne City are my pick to finish on top and go all the way to the championship. Their squad has a strong blend of experience and attacking quality, and they have the potential to be one of the most consistent teams across the season.
Auckland FC and Newcastle Jets will provide serious competition, but City have the pieces to reclaim the title.
Johnny Warren Medal: Joe Lolley — Newcastle Jets
Joe Lolley is my prediction to win the Johnny Warren Medal as the A-League Men’s best player.
The former Sydney FC attacker has made the move to Newcastle, where he could become the focal point of their attack. His technical ability, creativity and experience should make him a dangerous player throughout the campaign.
If Lolley can produce consistently in the final third and help Newcastle challenge near the top of the ladder, he could put himself firmly in the conversation for the award.
Golden Boot: Max Caputo — Melbourne City
Max Caputo is my pick to finish as the competition's leading goalscorer.
The young Melbourne City striker has been handed the club's No.9 shirt following Jamie Maclaren's departure, giving him a significant opportunity to establish himself as one of the league's leading forwards.
Caputo has already shown his potential, and a full season as a key attacking option could see him take another major step forward. If City's attack fires as expected, he should receive plenty of opportunities to find the net.
Rising Star: Amlani Tatu — Adelaide United
Amlani Tatu is my choice to emerge as the A-League Men’s Rising Star of the season.
The Adelaide United youngster is one to watch as he looks to establish himself at senior level. The upcoming campaign provides an opportunity for him to turn his potential into consistent performances and become a more prominent figure for his club.
If Tatu can earn regular minutes and make an impact in the final third, he could be one of the breakout players of the season.
