France still on top, they face the easiest opponent...

With the Round of 16 about to begin, the World Cup has reached the point where every mistake could end a nation's dream. Some teams have cruised through the opening four matches, while others have ridden momentum and resilience to stay alive.
Based on form, performances, quality of opposition and overall balance, here's why each of the 16 remaining teams sits where they do in my latest World Cup power rankings.
- France
France are STILL the clear favourites.
They've looked dominant in every phase of the tournament, boasting the most dangerous attack remaining while barely looking vulnerable defensively. Their depth is unmatched, and every game seems to produce another standout performer. Until someone proves they can stop them, France deserve to be number one.
- Spain
Spain have quietly gone about their business with complete control.
Their possession football has frustrated opponents, while their defensive organisation has been exceptional. A convincing win over Austria only reinforced the feeling that they're building towards something special, and they're peaking at exactly the right time.
- Brazil
Brazil haven't been flawless, but they've shown why they're always contenders.
Their attack remains one of the tournament's most explosive, although defensive lapses have occasionally left the door open for opponents. If they can tighten things up at the back, Brazil have every chance of lifting the trophy.
- Morocco
The tournament's biggest surprise is no longer a surprise.
Morocco have been one of the most complete teams in the competition, combining outstanding defensive structure with devastating counter-attacks. They rarely look rattled and continue to beat quality opposition through discipline rather than flair alone.
- Argentina
The reigning champions continue to find ways to win.
They haven't reached their absolute best, particularly after being pushed by Cape Verde, but tournament football is often about surviving difficult moments. With Lionel Messi still capable of deciding games on his own, Argentina remain one of the favourites.
- England
England are unbeaten, but questions remain.
They've progressed through every hurdle without producing a truly dominant performance, and penalty shootouts have become a recurring theme. The talent is obvious, but they need to become more clinical if they're to challenge France or Brazil. A win against Mexico could massively boost their status as a contender.
- Portugal
Portugal have steadily improved with every match.
Their victory over Croatia showed maturity and resilience, and their attacking quality means they can trouble anyone. However, occasional defensive lapses prevent them from climbing any higher in these rankings, with their midfield surprisingly quiet.
- Mexico
No team has embraced home advantage better.
Mexico remain unbeaten and are yet to concede a goal heading into the Round of 16. Their atmosphere, altitude and organisation make them an incredibly difficult opponent, and they could easily spring another upset. If they beat England; huge.
- Colombia
Colombia may not grab headlines, but they're incredibly effective.
They defend well, possess genuine attacking quality through Luis Diaz and have consistently found ways to edge close contests. They look built for knockout football. They create so many chances they could be a big threat.
- Norway
Norway have exceeded almost every expectation.
After navigating a difficult group and eliminating Cote d'Ivoire, they've become one of the stories of the tournament. Erling Haaland gives them a chance against anyone, but questions remain about whether the supporting cast can consistently match the elite nations.
- Belgium
Belgium have finally started to click.
A thrilling victory over Senegal showcased the attacking quality everyone expected before the tournament. Kevin De Bruyne continues to pull the strings, but defensive vulnerabilities remain a concern against stronger opposition. If they can now maintain this attacking quality, Belgium could go deep this World Cup.
- United States
The hosts continue to impress.
The Americans have exceeded expectations by reaching the Round of 16, combining energy, organisation and home support to produce some memorable performances. However, the suspension of Folarin Balogun comes at the worst possible time and limits their attacking threat. Belgium is their first BIG test.
- Switzerland
Switzerland continue to do what Switzerland always seem to do at major tournaments.
They're disciplined, organised and difficult to break down. While they may lack the attacking firepower of the teams above them, they'll make life uncomfortable for anyone they face, and have a solid side.
- Canada
Canada have already made history by reaching the knockout stages.
Their athleticism and work rate have been outstanding, but the gap in quality between themselves and the tournament's biggest contenders is still evident. Regardless of what happens next, this has been a landmark campaign, if they want an upset, their fans will need to be in full voice.
- Egypt
Egypt deserve enormous credit for reaching the Round of 16.
Their penalty shootout victory over Australia highlighted their resilience, but they were second best for long periods of that match. They'll need to improve significantly if they're to challenge Argentina, although they have shown they can be beaten.
- Paraguay
Nobody should underestimate Paraguay after eliminating Germany, but they're still the lowest-ranked team remaining.
Their defensive organisation and fighting spirit have been excellent, yet their lack of attacking threat could become a major issue against a French side that punishes even the smallest mistakes. Reaching the Round of 16 is already a remarkable achievement, but they'll need another huge upset to go any further.
