After many players impressed during this years edition of the World Cup the Socceroos squad looks like it could be very strong going into what will be a tightly competed Asian Cup.

The Potential New Additions For Tony Popovic

Lewis Miller/Riley McGree

These two would've been selected for the Socceroos this World Cup if they hadn't been injured. If they can stay injury free ahead of the 2027 Asian Cup, they both certainly should find themselves back in green and gold.

Alex Robertson

Harsh on Robertson not getting the nod in the World Cup. But promotion back to the Championship for his club side Cardiff should boost his odds next time around. Considering his situation was similar to Cristian Volpato in getting him to play for Australia, it would seem a waste if he was overlooked again.

Sam Silvera

Currently a free agent, but a very versatile and good player. Silvera was released by Middlesborough much to the disappointment of their fans, but should he get a move to another good club like Middlesbrough, he will be hard to overlook. Skilful, fast, and can play as a wing back as well as out wide, he would be a great option to cover several bases.

Zac Sapsford

Could've been a bolter for the Socceroos, but that jersey was given to Tete Yengi. Popovic clearly likes the more physical style of striker, hence Yengi's inclusion, plus his history of selecting Mitch Duke. But with Mohamed Toure being the main man up front, having a slightly different style of striker would be a great choice for the Asian Cup.

Marcus Younis

Was super impressive upon his return to the A-League, securing him a return to Europe with Danish side Brondby. Younis has started the preseason in great form with his name on the scoresheet already. He is a very direct old school style of winger which is very similar to Cristian Volpato and Nestroy Irankunda. Having Younis as an option off the bench would be a top selection for the Socceroos.

Akol Akon

Akon screams of another Popovic "picking the wonderkid" type selection. At just 17 he is attracting international admirers despite signing a new deal with Sydney FC. If Akon continues to impress, and potentially gets a European move, I would not be surprised if Akon is included as a super sub in Australia's squad.

On The Fringe

Gianluca Okon-Engstler/Dylan Leonard

Top young talents these two. They look certain to don green and gold at some point. At this stage they lack experience at the top level for their clubs. If they start getting good minutes they could be bolters into the Socceroos squad but at this stage they look just a few years away from being staples in the side.

Max Balard/Patrick Yazbek

Two decent players who both have 5 Socceroos caps each under their belts. There are just some better options ahead of them at this stage, and it's unlikely they get another crack unless there is an injury.

Luca Jovanovic

Just got a move to the MLS after impressing for Adelaide in the A-League. If Jovanovic has a great season in America he could find himself ahead of the likes of Zac Sapsford and Tete Yengi in the pecking order come Asian Cup time. Definitely one to watch.

Ajdin Hrustic , Awer Mabil, Jason Geria, Tete Yengi, Aziz Behich, Martin Boyle -

These guys seem like past players. Tony Popovic has to invest in the future and keeping these kind of players around seems regressive. Not that these guys are bad players, but with some of the young blood coming through, investing in them and giving them big opportunities is the way forward, rather than sticking with the old.
