The Round of 16 is complete, and just eight teams remain in the race to lift the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Some nations have strengthened their claim as genuine contenders, while others have climbed after producing statement victories. Here's my updated power rankings, with movement from my previous rankings.
- π«π· France (=)
Previous: 1st
France remain the team to beat. They weren't at their free-flowing best against Paraguay because the game was very scrappy, but the mark of champions is finding a way to win. Their squad depth, attacking quality and experience still make them favourites to lift the trophy.
- πͺπΈ Spain (β1)
Previous: 3rd
Spain move into second after another composed performance against Portugal. They've been the most complete side defensively while continuing to dominate possession against every opponent with a solid midfield. If anyone looks capable of stopping France, it's Spain.
- Argentina (β2)
Previous: 5th
Argentina had to dig deep against Egypt, but the reigning champions continue to find ways to progress. Lionel Messi remains the difference-maker, and knockout football is often about resilience rather than perfection.
- England (β2)
Previous: 6th
England haven't always convinced, but they've survived arguably the toughest path of any remaining nation after edging both Mexico and progressing through difficult knockout football. Tournament experience continues to shine through, this could be a huge chance for England to go all the way.
- Morocco (β1)
Previous: 4th
Morocco comfortably dispatched Canada and continue to impress. Their defensive organisation remains among the tournament's best, but Spain and Argentina's Round of 16 performances were enough to leapfrog them, and with Ismael Saibari injured that hurts their chances significantly due to how good he has been.
- Norway (β4)
Previous: 10th
Big movers in these rankings.
Norway shocked the football world by eliminating Brazil, instantly becoming one of the tournament's biggest stories. Erling Haaland is in outstanding form, and if they can upset Brazil, they'll believe they can beat anyone. If they can keep their opposition at bay, they know they can score goals for fun.
- Belgium (β4)
Previous: 11th
Belgium finally announced themselves with a dominant 4-1 victory over the United States. Belgium are finally looking to peak at exactly the right time, though a quarter-final against Spain is their toughest challenge yet and will be a huge test of their credentials.
- Switzerland (β5)
Previous: 13th
Switzerland round out the final eight after eliminating Colombia in a tense penalty shootout. They continue to prove they're one of the hardest teams in world football to break down, but they'll need another defensive masterclass against Argentina.
