The knockout stages of the 2026 FIFA World Cup are underway, and the opening four Round of 32 matches have already delivered everything fans could ask for. Two dramatic stoppage-time winners, and two penalty shootouts have set the tone for what promises to be a thrilling run to the final.
Canada, Brazil, Paraguay and Morocco are the first four nations through to the Round of 16, but each had to earn their place in vastly different fashion.
Canada became the first team to reach the Round of 16, edging South Africa 1-0 thanks to a dramatic stoppage-time winner.
South Africa once again showed why they were one of the stories of the group stage, frustrating the Canadians with another disciplined defensive display and looking destined to force extra time.
However, in the 92nd minute, Stephen Eustaquio finally found the breakthrough, sending Canada through and ending South Africa's inspiring World Cup campaign in heartbreaking fashion.
Despite the defeat, South Africa leave the tournament with plenty of pride after exceeding expectations to reach the knockout stages and pushing one of the host nations to the very end.
Brazil were made to work for their place in the last 16, defeating Japan 2-1 in one of the most entertaining matches of the tournament so far.
Japan matched Brazil for long periods and once again demonstrated the fearless football that helped them reach the knockout stages, and lead 1-0. Their energy and pressing caused problems throughout the contest, but Brazil's superior quality in the final third ultimately proved decisive.
The five-time world champions continue to build momentum as they chase another World Cup crown, while Japan bow out again in the knockouts, after another impressive tournament that reinforced their status as one of Asia's strongest footballing nations.
Paraguay produced one of the biggest results of the tournament so far, eliminating Germany on penalties after a gripping 1-1 draw.
Germany controlled large periods of the contest but were unable to find a decisive second goal with Jonathan Tah having a late extra time goal disallowed, allowing Paraguay to stay within touching distance before taking the match all the way to a shootout.
With the pressure at its highest, both keepers pulled off great saves, but Paraguay kept their composure from the spot to knock out one of the tournament favourites and book a famous place in the Round of 16.
It marks another unforgettable chapter in Paraguay's World Cup history and serves as a reminder that anything can happen once the knockout rounds begin.
The final match of the day also went the distance, with Morocco defeating the Netherlands on penalties following a 1-1 draw.
Morocco once again showcased the resilience and defensive organisation that has become their trademark on the world stage, refusing to buckle against one of Europe's strongest sides.
Issa Diop rescued his side with a stoppage time equaliser to force extra time. Bart Verbruggen made arguably the best save of the tournament, and look sharp and ready for the shootout.
After neither team could find a winner in extra time, the Atlas Lions held their nerve during the penalty shootout to secure another famous World Cup victory and continue their remarkable tournament.
Both sides missed penalties, but the penalty saving heroics of Yassine Bounou shone once again for Morocco, as they extend their unbeaten run to 33 games.
For the Netherlands, it is a bitterly disappointing exit after an unbeaten group-stage campaign, while Morocco continue to prove they belong among the world's elite.
The opening day of the Round of 32 has already produced unforgettable drama. Canada needed a stoppage-time winner to survive South Africa, Brazil were pushed all the way by Japan, while Paraguay and Morocco both claimed stunning penalty shootout victories over European heavyweights.
With four nations safely through to the Round of 16 and 12 knockout matches still to come, the 2026 FIFA World Cup is delivering exactly the kind of drama fans expect when every match becomes win or go home.
The only confirmed Round of 16 fixture so far is Canada v Morocco, in a game Morocco will fancy as they look to go one further and win Africa it's first World Cup trophy.
