Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany is expected to be sidelined for weeks after collapsing during training, with assistant Aaron Danks stepping in as the German champions await further medical updates.
Bayern Munich have confirmed that Vincent Kompany remains under medical care after being taken to hospital following a collapse during a reserve-team training session on Friday.
The 40-year-old Belgian was watching Bayern’s second team train when he required medical attention. The club subsequently confirmed that he would undergo further examinations and that his coaching staff would oversee training and match operations in his absence.
Bayern provide update on Kompany’s condition
Bayern sporting director Max Eberl confirmed on Saturday that Kompany was in a stable condition but would remain in hospital while doctors continued their examinations.
Eberl stressed that the club would not rush the manager’s return, with the cause of the incident and his recovery timeline still requiring further assessment.
The sporting director indicated that the absence was likely to last weeks rather than days, although no definitive return date had been established.
“The most important thing is that the cause is established and he gets fit again, and can recover in peace,” Eberl said, according to the club’s official update.
Kompany had been dealing with a viral infection in the days leading up to the incident. He missed some team activities before returning to the touchline for Bayern’s 2–2 Champions League draw against Arsenal on Wednesday.
The club has not confirmed that the illness caused his collapse, and further medical information is needed before drawing conclusions about what happened.
Aaron Danks takes charge
Assistant coach Aaron Danks is among the coaching staff overseeing Bayern’s football operations while Kompany recovers.
Danks was set to lead the team against Freiburg on Sunday, with Bayern choosing to proceed with the Bundesliga fixture rather than seek a postponement.
The temporary change comes during an important stretch of the season, with Bayern competing in both domestic and European competitions.
Danks said his conversation with Kompany had focused on the manager’s wellbeing rather than football matters, emphasising that the coaching staff would work together to keep the team moving forward.
Bayern must manage without their manager
Kompany’s absence presents a test for Bayern’s coaching staff, who must maintain the team’s preparation and competitive standards while their manager focuses on his recovery.
Bayern entered the weekend near the top of the Bundesliga table, having made a strong start to the campaign. Their immediate priority, however, is supporting Kompany and allowing him the time required to recover.
The club has expressed confidence in its existing coaching team and has not indicated that a permanent change in leadership is being considered.
For now, Bayern will continue under their current staff while awaiting further medical updates. No confirmed date has been set for Kompany’s return.
The focus remains on Kompany’s health, with Bayern making clear that football will take a back seat until he is ready to return.
