From a statement win at Anfield to a stunning Premier League upset, a historic Bundesliga goal and a six-goal demolition in Germany, the latest week of football delivered drama across Europe.
Manchester City sent a message to their title rivals, Coventry City produced one of the season’s biggest surprises, and Bayern Munich were left chasing the game after conceding the fastest goal in Bundesliga history.
Here are the biggest stories from the week.
MANCHESTER CITY MAKE A STATEMENT AT ANFIELD
Manchester City delivered one of the weekend’s biggest results, beating Liverpool 3-0 at Anfield.
The victory strengthened City’s early title credentials and put the spotlight on Liverpool, who were unable to find a way past their opponents. City’s commanding performance was a major talking point in a weekend that also saw Chelsea score five and Arsenal grind out a comeback win.
With the season still in its early stages, the result gives City a significant confidence boost while leaving Liverpool with questions to answer.
COVENTRY CITY HUMILIATE NEWCASTLE
Coventry City produced a stunning 4-1 victory over Newcastle United on Monday, making headlines with a result few would have predicted.
Jack Rudoni opened the scoring from the penalty spot before 19-year-old Sidiki Cherif added a second on his first Premier League start. Late goals from substitutes Ellis Simms and 18-year-old centre-back Stephen Mfuni completed the rout.
Newcastle had periods of pressure but could not turn their opportunities into goals, while Coventry were clinical when their chances arrived.
The result was a huge boost for Frank Lampard’s side and a difficult night for Newcastle manager Matthias Jaissle, whose approach came under scrutiny.
CHELSEA HIT FIVE AS ARSENAL AND BRIGHTON ALSO IMPRESS
Chelsea put on a show with a 5-1 demolition of Bournemouth, producing one of the weekend’s most emphatic performances.
Arsenal also picked up a comeback victory, beating Leeds United 2-1 after being pushed hard by their opponents. Meanwhile, Brighton continued their impressive start with a 2-0 win over Sunderland, despite being reduced to ten men.
At the other end of the table, Manchester United and Tottenham played out a 1-1 draw, while Crystal Palace came from behind to beat Nottingham Forest 3-1. Hull City and Everton shared four goals in a 2-2 draw.
BARCELONA WIN, REAL MADRID KEEP PACE
Barcelona were convincing winners at home, defeating Getafe 3-0 to continue their strong start to the La Liga campaign.
Real Madrid responded with a narrow 1-0 victory over Villarreal, keeping themselves in the hunt near the top of the table. Atlético Madrid also collected three points, beating Alavés 2-1 away from home.
The most entertaining scoreline came from Real Betis, who defeated Osasuna 5-2, with Isco starring in a performance that lifted Betis into third place.
There was late drama elsewhere as Levante and Sevilla played out a 3-3 draw, while Real Sociedad edged Deportivo La Coruña 3-2.
BAYERN CONCEDE THE FASTEST GOAL IN BUNDESLIGA HISTORY
Bayern Munich’s match against Augsburg produced a moment for the history books when Robin Fellhauer scored after just eight seconds, setting a new record for the fastest goal in Bundesliga history.
Bayern were forced to recover from the early setback and eventually salvaged a 2-2 draw. The result cost them the chance to keep pace with the leaders.
It was a weekend of surprises in Germany. RB Leipzig crushed Eintracht Frankfurt 6-0, with Christopher Nkunku scoring a hat-trick, while Bayer Leverkusen edged Mainz 4-3 in a seven-goal thriller.
Freiburg finished the round top of the table after a 2-1 win over Schalke, while Borussia Dortmund were held 2-2 by Werder Bremen.
INTER LEAD THE WAY IN SERIE A
Inter Milan continued their strong start with a 3-0 win over Parma, scoring all three goals in the first half through Petar Sučić, Hakan Çalhanoğlu and Marcus Thuram.
Napoli also enjoyed a comfortable afternoon, defeating Frosinone 3-0 as Kevin De Bruyne scored twice.
Elsewhere, Lazio beat Monza 3-1, while Juventus were held to a 1-1 draw by Cagliari. Roma and Como played out a goalless draw, and AC Milan were held 1-1 by Sassuolo.
PSG WIN AS MARSEILLE GET BACK ON TRACK
Paris Saint-Germain defeated Le Mans 3-1 to secure another Ligue 1 win, while Rennes recorded an emphatic 4-1 victory over Auxerre.
Brest also enjoyed a big afternoon, beating Angers 5-1, and Lens claimed a 2-1 win over Lyon.
Marseille ended their losing run with a 2-0 victory away to Troyes, giving them a much-needed lift. Nice also edged Strasbourg 2-1, while Monaco and Toulouse shared the points in a 2-2 draw.
HISTORY FOR SOUTH MELBOURNE
South Melbourne have written a remarkable chapter in Australian football, defeating Melbourne Victory on penalties to win the 2026 Australia Cup and become the first National Premier Leagues club to lift the trophy.
