Manchester United’s difficult start to the Premier League season continued after Tottenham Hotspur scored a stoppage-time equaliser to secure a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford.

United looked set to claim a much-needed victory after Bryan Mbeumo put them ahead in the second half. However, Dominic Solanke’s late header rescued a point for Tottenham, leaving both clubs with plenty of questions to answer.

For United manager Michael Carrick, the result was another frustrating missed opportunity. His side had the advantage on the scoreboard and, after Tottenham were reduced to 10 men, appeared to have everything required to see out the game.

Instead, Spurs found a way back.

United fail to capitalise on numerical advantage

The match changed significantly when Rodrigo Bentancur was sent off following an altercation involving Manchester United defender Luke Shaw.

With Tottenham down to 10 players, United had an opportunity to control the closing stages and protect their lead. But the hosts were unable to shut out their opponents, allowing Solanke to head home the equaliser in the 92nd minute.

The goal was a significant blow for Carrick, whose team desperately needed three points to build momentum.

United have collected just six points from their opening six Premier League matches, their worst start to a league campaign at this stage since the 1986-87 season.

Carrick admitted he was disappointed with the result and acknowledged that his side needed to improve quickly.

The concern is not simply the points dropped, but the circumstances in which they were lost. Conceding late against a team playing with 10 men will inevitably raise questions about United’s concentration, organisation and ability to manage pressure.

Tottenham show fight despite difficult start

While Tottenham will be disappointed not to have taken more from the match, their late equaliser offered encouragement.

Spurs dominated periods of the game and continued to push forward even after Bentancur’s dismissal. Solanke’s goal rewarded that persistence and gave manager Roberto De Zerbi something positive to take from a difficult afternoon.

Tottenham remain without a Premier League victory after their opening six matches, leaving them in the relegation zone. However, De Zerbi praised his players’ spirit and character, suggesting the performance could provide a platform to build on.

The result was particularly important given the expectations surrounding Tottenham following a summer transfer window in which they spent heavily on strengthening their squad.

There is still considerable work to do, but fighting back with 10 men at Old Trafford demonstrated a resilience that has been missing from parts of their early-season campaign.

How much pressure is on Carrick?

For Manchester United, the bigger concern is the growing gap between expectations and results.

A club of United’s size cannot afford to repeatedly surrender points in matches where victory appears within reach. Their six-point return from six games leaves little room for further mistakes if they want to compete for the European places.

Carrick will need to find a way to make United more consistent, particularly when protecting leads. Their latest draw was not a defeat, but it felt like another setback for a team searching for stability.

Tottenham leave Old Trafford with a point and renewed belief. United, meanwhile, are left to reflect on another opportunity wasted.

The question now is whether Carrick can turn these frustrating performances into results before the pressure intensifies further.
