Julián Álvarez has apologised to Atlético Madrid supporters for his comments about wanting to join Barcelona, admitting he understands why fans were angry with him during a turbulent period at the club.

The 26-year-old forward scored the only goal in Atlético's 1–0 victory over Deportivo La Coruña on Saturday before addressing the controversy that had damaged his relationship with sections of the club's fanbase.

“I'd like to apologise to our fans for what I said at the World Cup; it was a mistake in terms of how I said it and the timing,” Álvarez told Spanish broadcaster Movistar Plus.

“I understand why the fans are angry. If I were a fan, I'd be angry too.”

The apology comes after months of speculation surrounding the Argentina international's future, with Barcelona emerging as his preferred destination during the summer transfer saga.

How the Barcelona saga unfolded

Álvarez's future became a major talking point after he indicated during the 2026 World Cup that he wanted to fulfil his dream of playing for Barcelona.

The comments created a difficult situation for Atlético, who were unwilling to sell one of their key attacking players to a direct LaLiga rival.

With no move materialising, Álvarez remained in Madrid, but his relationship with sections of the Atlético support deteriorated. The striker was booed by home fans during the early stages of the season as uncertainty continued over his commitment to the club.

For Atlético, the situation presented a challenge both on and off the pitch. Álvarez had established himself as an important part of Diego Simeone's side since arriving from Manchester City in 2024, making the transfer speculation particularly sensitive for supporters.

The frustration was not simply about the possibility of losing a star player. It was also about the impression created by his public comments while representing the club.

A timely goal — and a change in atmosphere

Álvarez's apology followed a productive week in front of goal. After scoring against Stuttgart in the Champions League, the forward struck again against Deportivo, converting a close-range opportunity to secure three points for Atlético.

The goal was his second in consecutive matches and helped move the team to within two points of LaLiga leaders Barcelona.

Some supporters responded with a standing ovation after his decisive contribution, suggesting that his performances may be helping ease the tension.

Álvarez also said he had been feeling better physically and more comfortable on the ball in recent matches, while thanking teammates for supporting him throughout the difficult period.

“I hope that with hard work and humility I can turn this situation around,” he said.

The message was clear: he wants to rebuild trust through his performances rather than allowing the transfer dispute to dominate the conversation around him.

Atlético manager Diego Simeone welcomed the apology, noting that publicly admitting a mistake is not always easy.

Simeone also praised Álvarez's recent performances and stressed how important the forward is to the club's ambitions.

The manager's support could prove significant as Atlético attempt to maintain their challenge near the top of the league. A confident and productive Álvarez gives the side an important attacking option, while continued uncertainty over his future would risk becoming a distraction.

However, an apology does not automatically erase the frustration of supporters who felt unsettled by his comments.

The striker will need to demonstrate consistent commitment, contribute in important matches and show that his focus remains on Atlético's objectives.

Can Álvarez win the fans back?

Álvarez has made his position clearer, but the longer-term outcome will be determined by what happens next.

His recent goals have given supporters reasons to respond positively, and his willingness to acknowledge their frustration may help repair the relationship. Yet Atlético fans will ultimately judge him on his performances and whether they believe he is fully committed to the club.

There is also a wider question about the relationship between players and supporters in modern football. Players can have ambitions to join particular clubs, but publicly expressing those ambitions while under contract can leave supporters feeling that their own club is being treated as a stepping stone.

Álvarez has now acknowledged the timing and manner of his comments were wrong. The next step is turning that admission into sustained performances.

For Atlético, the ideal outcome is straightforward: their star forward returns to his best form, the supporters get behind him again, and the transfer controversy becomes a footnote rather than the defining story of his season.

For now, the winning goal and the apology have given Álvarez an opportunity to start rebuilding that relationship. Whether he can fully restore the trust of Atlético's supporters remains to be seen.
