Manchester United have been handed a stunning academy setback, with teenage wonderkid JJ Gabriel reportedly asking to leave the club just days after announcing himself on the European stage.
The 15-year-old has formally requested the cancellation of his registration and wants to become a free agent.
It is a remarkable development given how close Gabriel appeared to be to a historic first-team debut.
Reports indicate Manchester United manager Michael Carrick had been considering Gabriel for Wednesday night's Carabao Cup clash with Brighton & Hove Albion, a game that could have given the teenager the chance to become the club's youngest-ever senior player.
Instead, his future at Old Trafford is now seriously uncertain.
Gabriel's decision comes just days after arguably the biggest performance of his young career.
The forward scored a hat-trick for Manchester United's Under-19s in a 5-0 UEFA Youth League victory over Sabah, becoming the club's youngest scorer in the competition at 15 years and 339 days.
It was another extraordinary chapter in a rapid rise that has seen him attract comparisons with some of football's biggest young stars.
Last season, Gabriel scored 23 goals in 23 Under-18 Premier League appearances, despite beginning the campaign aged just 14.
He was subsequently named Manchester United's Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year and has continued his development with the Under-21s and around the first-team environment.
He has also already trained with the senior squad and made an unofficial first-team appearance during pre-season against Atletico Madrid.
Ryan Giggs recently described Gabriel as a "generational talent", while urging United to keep him around the first-team environment rather than sending him away on loan.
Gabriel reportedly deleted every post from his Instagram account last week, just as speculation around his Manchester United future intensified.
That does not prove the social-media move was connected to his desire to leave, but combined with the timing of his registration request, it has inevitably fuelled speculation among supporters.
There had also been growing attention around his pathway into the first team, particularly after other young players were given opportunities at senior and European level.
Gabriel had appeared to be on the verge of his own opportunity against Brighton. Now that potential debut appears to have disappeared completely.
If Gabriel does leave, there is unlikely to be a shortage of interest.
Chelsea have previously been reported as one of the clubs showing strong interest in the teenager, while reports have also linked him with interest from some of Europe's biggest clubs, including Barcelona, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich.
Manchester City have also previously made serious efforts to sign Gabriel. That is what makes the situation so concerning for United.
They aren't losing an academy player nobody else wants. They could potentially be losing one of the most highly-rated teenagers in English football to a rival club. He would not only be a great purchase, his signing would become a huge slap in the face for United.
Manchester United are reportedly still hopeful of resolving the situation, and his departure is not necessarily a completed transfer at this stage.
The bigger problem for Manchester United is this.
Manchester United have historically built their identity around giving young players a pathway into the first team.
The Class of 92 is the obvious example. More recently, players such as Marcus Rashford, and Kobbie Mainoo have demonstrated that academy graduates can become major first-team players at Old Trafford.
But the modern Manchester United environment is very different. The club is under enormous pressure to win immediately, the squad is constantly changing, managers are under scrutiny and expensive signings are expected to deliver.
That creates a difficult question for academy players:
If you're good enough, how certain are you that Manchester United will actually give you a chance?
Gabriel's situation is particularly uncomfortable because he appears to have been knocking on the door at an incredibly young age.
Many young talents aren't simply choosing clubs based on history anymore. They are choosing the pathway.
They want to know:
Who is going to develop me?
Will I actually play?
How quickly can I reach senior football?
Is there a clear plan for my career?
... and other questions of this nature.
Manchester United now have to convince one of their brightest prospects that the answer to those questions is still "Old Trafford". A fascinating story is unfolding here, United's handling of this will be interesting to see.
