Everton could be facing another major change in ownership, with The Friedkin Group confirming it is exploring new investment options that include the potential sale of a controlling stake in the Premier League club.

The announcement comes less than two years after the American group completed its takeover of Everton in December 2024, ending Farhad Moshiri’s turbulent period as owner.

In a statement published on Friday, October 9, the club’s owners said they believed the time was right to consider Everton’s next chapter after addressing significant financial and operational challenges.

The development does not mean a sale has been completed, but it opens the door to another potential change in control at Goodison Park’s successor, Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Why are Everton’s owners considering a sale?

When The Friedkin Group took over, Everton were dealing with considerable financial uncertainty and difficulties both on and off the pitch.

The ownership group said its initial priority had been to stabilise the club, provide the investment needed to secure its future and help complete the long-awaited move to the new Hill Dickinson Stadium.

With that foundation now in place, the group says it is exploring options for fresh investment and a possible sale of a controlling interest.

Everton confirmed that investment bank Moelis & Company has been retained to advise on the process.

The club’s statement also stressed that any potential new owner would need to be the right person or group to build on the progress already made.

Neither Everton nor The Friedkin Group has provided further details about prospective buyers, a possible sale price or a timetable for any transaction.

David Moyes surprised by the announcement

The news reportedly caught Everton manager David Moyes by surprise.

According to Reuters, Moyes said he had only learned of the development shortly before his media commitments, highlighting how quickly the situation had emerged publicly.

The announcement raises questions about the club’s longer-term direction, particularly as Everton attempt to establish themselves at their new stadium and work towards a return to regular European competition.

A change in ownership could potentially bring fresh investment, but the impact would depend on the intentions and financial commitments of any prospective buyer.

For now, the club’s immediate footballing priorities remain unchanged, with the ownership group stating it will continue supporting Everton throughout the process.

What could a takeover mean for Everton?

The possibility of new ownership is significant for a club that has endured years of instability.

Everton supporters will be looking for clarity over the club’s financial future, its transfer ambitions and the level of investment available to manager Moyes.

The move to Hill Dickinson Stadium provides the club with a new home and an opportunity to grow commercially, but turning that potential into consistent success on the pitch will require careful planning and resources.

A new controlling owner could offer a fresh financial push. Equally, another ownership transition would bring uncertainty until the intentions of any incoming group become clear.

The Friedkin Group has also been involved with other football investments, including Italian club Roma, meaning its wider portfolio forms part of the context surrounding the decision.

However, the owners have not publicly outlined a specific reason for exploring a sale beyond their stated desire to consider new investment options and the club’s next phase.

What happens next?

For now, Everton remain under The Friedkin Group’s control while the investment process develops.

There has been no confirmed buyer, no completed transaction and no official change to the club’s ownership.

The key question is whether the process attracts a suitable investor capable of providing the financial backing Everton need to move forward.

After only a short period under its current owners, Everton could once again be approaching a major turning point. Supporters will hope that any eventual outcome provides long-term stability and a clear plan to return the club to the upper reaches of English football.
