Cristiano Ronaldo has walked out of Portugal's training camp in extraordinary circumstances, leaving his international future hanging in the balance.
Ronaldo left Portugal's camp ahead of Thursday's Nations League match against Denmark after head coach Jorge Jesus confirmed that he would again be left out of the starting XI.
Portugal subsequently defeated Denmark 4-2 without their captain, adding another layer to a dramatic situation that has dominated Portuguese football.
So, what actually happened?
The tension appears to have started with Portugal's previous Nations League match against Norway.
Ronaldo was left on the bench for the entire 2-1 victory, despite reportedly being expected to enter the match as a substitute.
Jesus said he had originally intended to bring Ronaldo on, but changed his tactical plan during the game.
Ronaldo was reportedly unhappy with the decision and did not join his teammates in celebrating with supporters after the final whistle.
Things escalated when Jesus then confirmed that Ronaldo would also not start against Denmark.
Jesus was particularly emphatic when discussing his authority as manager, saying that neither Ronaldo nor anybody else would change his tactical decisions. Shortly afterwards, Ronaldo left the training camp.
The Portuguese Football Federation confirmed that he had departed, while Ronaldo himself released a statement saying that he had made the decision following Jesus' press conference and a conversation with FPF president Pedro Proenca.
Ronaldo added that he would explain his reasons to the Portuguese public "in due course".
So why is this so significant?
Because Ronaldo has never previously walked out of a Portugal training camp during his 23-year international career.
He has made 234 appearances for Portugal and scored 146 goals, both extraordinary numbers that underline just how central he has been to the national team for more than two decades.
This isn't simply another disagreement between a player and manager.
Ronaldo is Portugal's captain, record goalscorer and one of the most important figures in the country's football history, and Jesus isn't some unknown manager who has suddenly taken over.
He previously coached Ronaldo at Al-Nassr, meaning the two already have a professional relationship.
Could Ronaldo be retiring from international football? That question remains unclear at this stage.
There has been widespread speculation that Ronaldo's departure could represent the end of his international career, but Ronaldo has not announced his retirement.
In fact, his own statement specifically said he would explain his reasons for leaving at a later time. Portugal have also not announced that he has been removed from the national team permanently.
So, at this stage, saying Ronaldo has retired would go beyond what has actually been confirmed.
What is clear is that the relationship between Ronaldo and Jesus has deteriorated dramatically in a very short period of time.
Perhaps the most interesting development came after Ronaldo's departure. Portugal defeated Denmark 4-2 without their captain.
That result doesn't prove Portugal are better without Ronaldo, nor does one match answer the much bigger question about his role in the team.
But it does mean Jesus has immediately been given a positive result to support his decision to leave Ronaldo out.
The coach has also made it clear that he intends to select players according to his tactical plans rather than reputation.
Jesus said that Ronaldo's status would not influence his decisions and that the same rules applied to every player.
There is another potentially important issue. Portugal's disciplinary regulations reportedly allow for a player who leaves the national team without permission to receive a suspension of between one and six months, alongside a possible fine.
Whether those rules will actually be applied to Ronaldo remains to be seen. The circumstances of his departure, including his conversation with FPF president Proenca, will likely be relevant to any decision.
If this really is the end, the circumstances would be remarkably different from what many would have expected.
Ronaldo's Portugal career has included the country's first major men's international trophy at Euro 2016, Nations League success and numerous individual records.
He also played at the 2026 World Cup, which he had previously indicated would be his final World Cup.
Now, only months later, his international career could potentially be ending with him leaving a training camp following a disagreement over his selection.
But there is still a crucial piece of information missing. Ronaldo hasn't told his full side of the story yet.
He has explicitly said that he will reveal his reasons for leaving the camp "in due course".
Until that happens, there are competing accounts of exactly how the relationship between Ronaldo and Jesus broke down.
For now, what we know is simple: Ronaldo was left on the bench against Norway, was told he would not start against Denmark, subsequently left Portugal's camp, and Portugal then won 4-2 without him.
The next chapter depends largely on what Ronaldo says next and whether Jorge Jesus and the Portuguese Football Federation are prepared to bring their captain back.
