Brazil Score Last Minute Equaliser in Classy Socceroos Display

The Socceroos have almost produced one of the biggest results in Australian football history, drawing with five-time World Cup champions Brazil 1-1 in Townsville.

In front of a packed Queensland Country Bank Stadium, Tony Popovic's side couldn't hold their nerve against a Brazil team packed with world-class talent to secure a famous result and send a huge statement heading into the next stage of the Socceroos' development.

Brazil arrived in Townsville as one of international football's most decorated nations.

Despite the game being a friendly, Carlo Ancelotti named an attacking starting XI featuring Vinicius Junior, Raphinha and Endrick, alongside experienced defender Marquinhos and Manchester United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes.

Yet Australia refused to sit back and simply admire their opponents. Popovic's side were organised, aggressive and disciplined without the ball, while constantly looking for opportunities to attack in transition.

It was exactly the type of football Brazil coach Ancelotti had warned his team about before kick-off.

The Brazilian manager had praised Popovic's work with Australia, describing the Socceroos as a compact and defensively strong team with a dangerous counter-attacking threat.

Those qualities were on full display.

Australia eventually found the breakthrough and then did what they have become increasingly good at under Popovic defending their advantage, until the very last corner, where Bournemouth winger Rayan headed one in off the crossbar.

Harry Souttar, Lucas Herrington, and Alessandro Circati provided a physical presence at the back, with Nestroy Irankunda producing another brilliant performance on the wing including a world-class freekick.

This is the first international window for the Socceroos since the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with Popovic already beginning to shape his squad for the next cycle and the 2027 Asian Cup. Football Australia selected a 26-man squad containing seven players who had not previously been capped by Australia, alongside returning World Cup players.

That means tonight was not simply about getting a result against Brazil. It was an opportunity for Australia's next generation to experience exactly what international football at the highest level feels like.

Players such as Eli Adams, Marcus Younis, Dylan Leonard, Jacob Chapman, Kealey Adamson and others have been brought into the environment as Popovic looks to build depth around the players who took Australia to the World Cup, and against Brazil, they have been given the perfect examination.

Despite it being a friendly game, it's none-the-less a famous result in the history of Australian football despite the late goal denying the Socceroos their second-ever win over Brazil.
